English Language Learning Programs
WorkOne provides Adult Education courses, including mathematics, reading, writing, High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation, and ELL classes.
NWI Adult Learning provides ELL classes in Crown Point, Hammond, Michigan City, Merrillville, Lake Station, Portage, and Schererville.
Legal Services
Hammond Legal Aid Clinic requires applicants to be residents of Hammond, IN. The clinic offers assistance across a range of legal matters, including guardianship, estate planning, and immigration.
NWI Volunteer Attorneys is a nonprofit organization located in Hobart, IN that offers legal advice and services through volunteer attorneys.
Indiana Legal Services-Merrillville is a nonprofit law organization serving communities across Indiana.
Food Banks and Pantries
- East Chicago Food Pantry: Monday–Thursday, 9 AM–11 AM
- East Chicago Free Community meals: Monday–Friday, 12 PM–1 PM
- Hammond-Munster Food Pantry: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 1 PM–4 PM; Wednesdays, 9 AM–12 PM
- Gary-Merrillville Food Pantry: Once a month from 10 AM–12 PM (check Facebook for dates)
- Porter County Food Pantry: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, 1 PM–3 PM
- Maintains a network of over 100 partner pantries across both counties.

St. Mary of the Lake’s Food Pantry:
- Located at Lessard Hall, next to the church.
- Distributes groceries and supplies on the third Monday of each month from 9–11 AM CT.
- Requires proof of residency in Lake or Porter County.
